Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) refers to polyethylene with a molecular weight of more than 1.7 million to 7 million. Compared with ordinary high molecular weight polyethylene, with the increase of molecular weight especially after more than 1.7 million, it shows its special superior mechanical properties. Its excellent comprehensive performance, such as abrasion resistance, impact resistance, low friction coefficient, chemical resistance, absorption impact energy, attract wide attention and application by experts at home and abroad. In recent years, it has been widely used in power plants, steel mills, mines and wharves, which has wide development prospect by replacing traditional materials such as stainless steel, high manganese steel, wear-resistant cast iron, bronze, nylon in wide range.

(2)High wear resistance

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene has high wear resistance, which is the best in all known plastics. The higher the molecular weight, the higher the abrasion resistance and impact resistance of the material. (Table 2). The Baosteel ore is made of 4.5 million ultra high molecular weight polyethylene for lining board use, the ore is not bonded, and the service life is long, which obviously reduces the maintenance cost.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has excellent wear resistance. ( Take U01 standard as example ). The wear rate in mortar is 6.5 times that of stainless steel (1Cr18Ni9Ti), 3.7 times of the plastic king (PTFE) and 2.5 times of nylon.

(3)High impact strength

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene impact strength (gap) >100kg.cm/cm2. The impact strength of special products can reach 200kg. Cm/cm2. It is one of the most vulnerable engineering plastics in existing plastics. Room temperature impact strength and impact resistance of polycarbonate, under low temperature to 40 ℃ condition still has a high shock resistance, even in liquid nitrogen (269 ℃) environment still maintain its impact resistant ability, is unmatched by other engineering plastics. 30 - Ningbo Beilun port terminal, sinotrans Nantong terminal protector string using the company molecular weight of 4 million impingement of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene veneers, under the condition of all used up to now, has achieved good using effect.

(4)Low friction coefficient

The friction coefficient of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene is small, about 0.1~ 0.25, and has good self-lubricating property, which is an ideal bearing, shaft sleeve, slider and lining material. It can work in east China or rotating form without lubricating oil and avoid contaminating the proper food process. Because the surface activation energy is low, it has the surface nonbonding property, which can prevent the material from sticking. The U.S. bulk transportation department has installed ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene liners in 25 coal warehouses and has maintained continuous operation to date. The cone-shaped falling coal tube installed at Minhang power plant adopts U01 material with a molecular weight of 4.5 million, no longer arching and blocking, and achieving satisfactory results.

( 5 ) Excellent corrosion resistance

High molecular weight polyethylene has high chemical stability and can withstand all kinds of corrosive media (acid, alkali, salt) and most solvent erosion. The company USES the ultra high molecular weight polyethylene to make the corrosion resistant chemical pump and the impeller has reached the same level of foreign products.

( 6 ) Absorption impulse skills

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has a strong absorbing ability and silencing ability. Especially when the molecular weight reaches 4.5 million, it is the best material for resilience. Therefore, the application in glass bottles, aluminum cans, assembly lines or metal chains has a strong acoustic impedance value, which significantly reduces noise. On the production line of Shanghai Volkswagen automobile company, the rail and the Shanghai port pier replace the steel reinforcement, all achieved better results.

( 7 ) Water absorption rate

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has a very low water absorption rate. Therefore, the physical mechanical properties are independent of the humidity factors in the operating conditions.

( 8 ) Thermal performance

Vicat softening point is 134 ℃, the long-term use of temperature below 90 ℃. Under special circumstances, it is allowed to be used at higher temperatures (for example, the application of the sand control board of Baosteel is an example of operating in a high temperature environment). Excellent resistance to low temperature performance, and even can be used in cryogenic liquid nitrogen, using temperature can reach below 269 ℃. In 20 ℃ ~ 100 ℃ linear expansion coefficient is 1.5 x10-4.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has good electrical properties in the loose range of temperature and frequency.

Therefore, it is suitable for electrical engineering construction materials.

( 10 ) Other performance

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is odorless and non-toxic, and also has physiological inertia and physiological adaptability. The food and drug administration (FDA) allows for the use of food and drug contact.
Mechanical processing performance is good and can be used in general metal processing machine tools, even the woodworking machine tools and tools for processing.

In containers, bins, hopper or other containers of bulk in the chute, conveyor trough and similar storage and transport processes are often blocked by clumps, sticky knots, and arch bridges. According to foreign experience, high molecular weight polyethylene lining has been widely used and has good effect. ( the scope of use is shown in table 6)

Due to the special properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, it has been widely used in foreign countries in the mid-1980s. With the development of processing technology and capability, application fields have also been developed, and the scope of use is shown in table 6.

(2)Food, food machinery

Because ultra high molecular weight polyethylene is non-toxic, it has been recognized by the health and drug agency, which makes it easier to disinfect and clean. Therefore it is often used to be food bottles. The automatic packaging assembly line is more suitable for parts than other materials, mainly used for star wheel, rail, timing screw, guide roller gear, bearing liner.


This product can be used as a quay or rubber ft-proof panel and prevent the damage caused by the collision of ship and wharf. With good weather resistance, it can replace some steel or rubber string. In the second phase of Beilun phase, 300,000 tonnage wharf has been used as a drum protector for the anti-punching panel, which has been well received.

(4)Chemical industry

Suitable for susceptible to wear and high impact strength and contact with strong corrosive medium components, such as plate and frame filter press filter plate, corrosion of the impeller, pump shell, mixer drum of propeller, packing, electroplating, especially having excellent corrosion resistance in the usage of hydrofluoric acid.
